I am beyond excited and thrilled to serve as your 2016-2017 Community Health Director, thank you all for this wonderful opportunity, this year is going to be fantastic! I started my nursing path when I was about twelve years old and spent part of a summer at my local hospital learning about the different health care career options. I thought I wanted to be a veterinarian because my dad was one and growing up on a farm I loved animals; I had no clue what I was doing at a hospital in the beginning, but it was that summer that I realized my passion for helping people. I then continued on to Sonoma State University to pursue my nursing degree.

I first started loving community service and outreach in high school and decided to keep going with it in college. I worked for our on campus student-run non-profit community service organization, in which I organized and ran community service projects on and off campus for college students to participate in. Through this, I was able to gain a lot of experience in finding fun ideas for projects and ways to implement them. I also am currently the President of the Sonoma State CNSA Chapter; we are a new chapter and our board has worked very hard this past year in getting our chapter more involved and starting up a lot of community outreach projects in our area.

As nurses we play a huge role in community outreach because not all lives are saved in the acute care setting and we need to be able to help our patients once they do leave the hospital and return home. My goals for this year are focused around this concept.

Goals for 2016-2017:

  • I want to see more co-chapter events and connectivity between the chapters throughout the state. I think that it is very important for members to have the opportunity to meet other members outside of their school and a great way to bring more connectivity is through community outreach projects.
  • I want to continue to initiate the Save a Heart Campaign. In this past year, CNSA has helped to teach hands only CPR to over 1,200 people in local communities, I want to double this by the end of my term. I want to help chapters facilitate this event at the local level and help chapters have better access to the necessary funds for the event.
  • I want to help serve the underserved through bringing more awareness about mobile health clinics to our chapters and communities. Our recent passage of the mobile health clinic resolution sparked my interest and it is my goal to initiate this objective.
