Eva TanEva Tan 2016-2017
Cultural Awareness Committee Chair
CSU Sacramento
Graduation: Spring 2018

I am a first semester nursing student at Sacramento State University, and I am honored to serve as this year’s Cultural Awareness Committee Chair.

Before I made the jump to nursing, I worked as a relations specialist at an electronic medical records company that served rural health clinics in California. I had the opportunity to learn about complicated Medicare/Medicaid processes and speak with many different providers and medical staff to understand their EMR needs. Prior to working in the private industry, I volunteered two years at community clinic in Sacramento that served the underserved Middle Eastern and South Asian population in Sacramento. There I had the chance to interact with people of Muslim, Sikh, Hindi, Buddhist, and Christian culture and learn about their health care concerns and goals.

As the Cultural Awareness Committee Chair, I want to continue learning about different cultural sensitivities and help my fellow nursing students develop nursing considerations for people from all different type of backgrounds. The previous chair holder is from my local CNSA chapter, and I will continue his work on helping other chapters establish a Spanish Terminology course at their campus, in addition to a few other goals.

Goals for 2016-2017:

  • Create a committee that connects members from CNSA chapters that are invested in the promotion of cultural awareness.
  • Promote nursing considerations for different cultures through social media.
  • Assist a minimum of at least 2 chapters with establishing a Spanish Medical Terminology course that provides a certification upon satisfactory completion.
  • Creating interactive workshops for nursing students to learn about culture-specific observances
