Passion. If I chose one word to describe why I am honored to be your 2016-2017 Membership Director South, it is just that. Walking into 2016 Convention in Visalia I felt it to the core. I knew why I wanted to be a nurse.
In my teen years I lost both of my grandparents to cancers. The burn and frustration of the unknown and my helplessness in the progression of their illnesses, drove me to push aside each path I had previously considered; Law enforcement, psychiatry, and education all took a backseat. What I didn’t know was that being a nurse wasn’t only about the medicine. As nurses we will be protectors of our patient’s rights, teachers not only to youth but to our families and communities, and advocates for the misunderstood, open ears and open hearts for the patients and families going through the best and worst days of their lives. “Surprise!” said the universe; All of my ambitions, in one reality.

What changed me that day was learning all of your ‘why’s. The room was abuzz at opening ceremony, not a dry eye in the audience as we thought on why we all had chosen the path we have. The burning in my stomach returned and I knew my ambitions had aggregated.

Goals for 2016-2017: My goals this year include sharing that same passion and zeal I felt from you all at convention with all the chapters in the south through a two-fold process:

  • Step 1: Conduct a needs and strengths assessment of each chapter, and facilitate the connection of each chapter to the appropriate resources within other chapters so we can fortify each other.
  • Step 2: Provide a forum to keep those lines of communication open and evolving so now all chapters can improve and grow together through shared regional events promoting community health, breakthrough to nursing, and image of nursing state goals.
  • Additionally, I hope to use the feedback received from the needs assessment to facilitate appropriate workshops and discussion groups at membership south meeting.

As a 3rd semester student at San Diego State University, I have had the opportunity to learn from and thrive in a flourishing chapter. I currently hold the Community Health Director role on my chapter board and am actively involved on our College Council and in philanthropic efforts. I bring with me similar leadership experience in various organizations, but any goal is only as strong and achievable as the team behind it. So please email [email protected] to join our committee! I am here for you so please don’t hesitate to contact me. No question/request is too small or big. I look forward to hearing from you all!
